In recent years my artwork has taken a certain direction away from landscape and towards a more risk-taking, abstract style. My intention is to explore the visual surface through a kind of drawing/painting that evokes a flat pattern plane, that uses mark making in collaboration with the subconscious (and unconscious), and that moves outward from the calligraphic to an expression of the living world.

I have been most influenced by the early 20th C French painters - Bonnard, Matisse, Dufy - and by the Chinese calligrapher, Ch’i Pai-Shih, by the process painters who believe that working and reworking the unfolding painting surface is the essence of a piece, and from training in Chinese and Japanese calligraphy, martial arts, Buddhist thought and practice.
